A typical week (hours)
Most of us have less spare time than social media suggests and more than it feels like at 9pm. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2025 American Time Use Survey found women spent an average of 4.8 hours a day on leisure, with TV the biggest single use of leisure time across everyone (2.6 hours a day). People aged 35 to 44 had the least leisure of any age group, at 3.9 hours.
Rest matters, and this isn't about giving it up. It's about choosing a few hours that would otherwise drift, and putting them toward something that builds your own earning ability: a software skill, an AI tool, editing, bookkeeping, a qualification. Start with what you already know and what people already ask you for.
Choosing a skill
- Start with what people already ask you for. Organising, writing, numbers, design, teaching. Those requests are a sign of a need you could meet.
- Look for something you can practise in small slots. An hour after dinner works for editing, spreadsheets or an AI tool; less so for something that needs a studio.
- Check the cost before you start. Many good beginner courses are free or low-cost. Be wary of anything that promises income.
- Keep a record of what you make. A small portfolio, even three pieces, says more than a certificate.
Start before it feels ready
The most common reason a plan like this stalls isn't time; it's waiting to feel ready. A first piece of work, shared with one person, teaches you more than another week of research. Choose the slot, choose the first lesson, and put it in the diary.
