When to start decorating for Christmas, and a timeline that keeps it calm

There's no rule, but there is a pattern. Here's what search data shows about when people start, and a week-by-week checklist so it doesn't all land on one weekend.

Early November: plan

Mid November: gather

Late November: the big weekend

Early December: finish

January: pack away for next year

When do people start? Google Trends data for the search "christmas decorating ideas" in the US shows the same pattern every year from 2021 to 2025. Interest starts climbing in late October, keeps rising through November, and reaches its highest week straight after Thanksgiving (for example, 30 November to 6 December 2025). The UK follows nearly the same curve, peaking in the same week in 2025. (See the data on Google Trends.)

So if you feel like starting earlier, you're not alone, and if you wait until December, neither are you. What helps most is spreading the work out. The checklist below breaks it into small weekly jobs, from planning in early November to packing away in January.

Safety on decorating day

Lights and candles: check cables for damage before you hang them, don't overload sockets or extension leads, switch lights off when you go out or go to bed, and keep candles away from greenery and fabric.
