Frequently Asked Questions (Couples Bill Split Calculator (Different Incomes))
Is it fair to split bills 50/50 when one partner earns more?
50/50 is equal in dollars or pounds, but not in effort: with take-home pay of 3,350 and 6,900, half of 5,115 in shared costs takes 76% of one person's pay and 37% of the other's. Whether that's fair is for the two of you to decide; the useful step is seeing what each split leaves each person.
How do you split bills proportionally to income?
Divide your take-home pay by your combined take-home pay to get your share, then multiply the monthly shared costs by it. On 3,350 and 6,900 the shares are 32.7% and 67.3%, so on 5,115 of shared costs one partner pays about 1,672 and the other about 3,443, and both put in about 50% of their pay.
Should I use gross or take-home pay to split bills?
Take-home pay usually gives a truer picture, because it's what actually reaches your account after tax and payroll deductions. Gross salary can overstate the higher earner's spending power. Use the same basis for both of you.
Can unpaid housework count towards my share?
Some couples give a credit for unpaid home hours such as cooking, laundry and school admin. You agree an hourly value and how much of it to count, and the hours-credit split lowers the share of whoever does more. If counting hours doesn't feel right for you, set the value to 0.
